SPRINGBOK RANGE - SPR-2-/3-/4-DP
DISC PLOUGH
Master South Africa’s toughest terrain with the SPR Series Disc Plough - the ultimate investment in long-term farm profitability. Engineered specifically for our rugged local conditions, the SPR-2, 3 and 4 DP range combines a massive 70mm reinforced frame with high-tensile solid axles to slice through hard-pan soils and stony ground where others fail. Designed for tractors from 25–50 HP, these implements don’t just work the land; they protect your bottom line with maintenance-free triple-seal bearings and superior soil inversion that maximises every drop of moisture.

CORE FUNCTION
-
SOIL INVERSION: Cutting, lifting and turning the soil to bury crop residue, weeds and organic matter, which aids in decomposition and soil enrichment.
-
DEEP TILLAGE: Reaching depths of up to 200mm to break up compacted soil layers (hardpan), improving aeration and water infiltration for root systems.
-
STUBBLE MULCHING: Effectively chopping and mixing surface trash and crop remains into the topsoil to prevent erosion and improve soil structure.
INTENDED APPLICATION
-
NEW LAND PREPARATION: Ideal for clearing and cultivating "virgin" land or pastures that have not been tilled for several seasons.
-
CHALLENGING TERRAINS: Specifically suited for stony, root-filled or weedy fields. Because the discs rotate, they roll over obstructions that would typically break a fixed-blade plough.
-
HEAVY & DRY SOILS: Best used in hard, dry or sticky clay soils where heavy penetration is required to create a workable seedbed.
-
CONTOUR PLOUGHING: Frequently used for ridging up contours and maintaining field levels in hilly or uneven landscapes.
"Strength that runs deep."
To get the most out of your SPR Series in hard-baked or 'brak' soil, ensure your disc scrapers are adjusted to sit roughly 2–3mm off the disc surface. This prevents sticky clay buildup and maintains the 'slice' of your high-tensile blades. Furthermore, by correctly setting your hitch leveling, you ensure the 70mm reinforced frame distributes weight evenly across all discs, preventing 'skating' and ensuring a consistent 150mm+ depth - even when the ground feels like concrete."
OPERATIONAL CONVENIENCE & EXCELLENCE
1. RAPID HITCHING & TRANSPORT
-
Three-Point Linkage: The category-standard mounting system allows a single operator to back the tractor up and hitch the equipment in minutes.
-
High Ground Clearance: When lifted via the tractor’s hydraulics, the compact design provides ample clearance, making it easy to transport between fields or over rough farm roads without the discs dragging.

2. "SET AND FORGET" RELIABILITY
-
Self-Cleaning Action: Unlike moldboard ploughs that often "plug" with mud or grass, the rotating discs naturally shed debris. This ensures fewer stops to manually clear the frame, keeping you in the tractor seat longer.
-
Maintenance-Free Bearings: The UCFL206 triple-seal bearings are designed for "grease and go" reliability. Their high resistance seals mean you spend less time in the workshop and more time tilling, even in dusty or muddy environments.
3. EASY FIELD MANEUVERABILITY
-
Short Turning Radius: Because the plough is mounted directly to the tractor (rather than trailed), it is incredibly easy to maneuver in tight corners, small plots or irregularly shaped fields.
-
Adjustable Geometry: The working depth is easily controlled directly from the tractor’s hydraulic lift lever, allowing the operator to adjust on the fly as soil conditions change across a single field.
4. FORGIVING IN TOUGH TERRAIN
-
Non-Stop Plowing: In fields with hidden stones or roots, the discs roll over obstructions. This eliminates the "shear bolt" frustration common with other ploughs, where you would typically have to stop, get out and replace a broken bolt every time you hit a rock.

SAFETY AND OPERATOR PROTECTION GUIDE
Operating a disc plough involves high mechanical forces and sharp components. To prevent serious injury or equipment damage, all operators must adhere to the following protocols:
1. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE)

-
Footwear: Always wear steel-toed boots to protect against heavy components during hitching and the sharp edges of the discs.
-
Hand Protection: Use heavy-duty work gloves when adjusting scrapers or handling the 610mm discs to prevent cuts.
-
Clothing: Avoid loose-fitting clothing or jewelry that could become snagged in the three-point linkage or the rotating discs.
2. PRE-OPERATION SAFETY CHECKS

-
Disc Integrity: Inspect discs for cracks or severe chips. A damaged disc can shatter under the high pressure of soil penetration.
-
Hardware Tightness: Ensure all bolts on the 10mm mounting plates and 70mm hangers are torqued correctly. Vibration during tillage can loosen nuts over time.
-
Linkage Pins: Verify that all linchpins and hitch pins are securely locked in the tractor’s three-point system.
3. SAFE HITCHING & UNHITCHING

-
The "No-Go" Zone: Never allow anyone to stand between the tractor and the plough while the tractor is backing up to hitch.
-
Stable Ground: Only unhitch the equipment on level, firm ground. Use wooden blocks under the frame to ensure the unit does not tip over, as the weight is concentrated on the circular discs.
4. OPERATIONAL SAFETY (IN THE FIELD)

-
Riders Prohibited: Never allow anyone to ride on the plough frame to add extra weight. This is extremely dangerous and can lead to fatal falls into the path of the discs.
-
Hydraulic Safety: Always lower the plough to the ground before exiting the tractor cab. Never work under a plough that is held up only by the tractor’s hydraulic lift.
-
Underground Utilities: Before ploughing "virgin" land, verify the location of any buried irrigation pipes, electrical cables or gas lines.
-
Lift Rule: Always raise the implement completely before turning. Making sharp turns with the discs in the ground creates massive lateral stress that can cause mechanical failure or tractor instability.
5. MAINTENANCE & CLEANING SAFETY

-
Sharp Edges: Even dull-looking discs can cause deep lacerations. Treat all disc edges as "live" blades.
-
Engine Off: Always turn off the tractor engine, remove the key and engage the parking brake before performing any adjustments to the scrapers or bearings.
-
Blocked Raised Position: If you must work underneath the plough for repairs, the frame must be supported by certified jack stands or heavy timber blocks, never just the tractor hydraulics.
FIELD SAFETY GUIDE:
SPRINGBOK DISC PLOUGH
To achieve superior soil inversion while protecting your equipment and ensuring maximum safety, follow these field procedures:

A. ENGAGING THE SYSTEM

-
Startup Height: Always raise the disc plough completely using the tractor's three-point linkage before moving into position. The discs should never be in contact with the ground when the tractor begins to move.
-
Hydraulic Control: Lower the unit gradually into the soil only once the tractor is in forward motion. Avoid "dropping" the plough into hard ground, as the sudden impact can stress the 70mm reinforced frame.
-
Alignment Check: Ensure the tractor’s top link is adjusted so the frame is level. This ensures all discs (2, 3, or 4 depending on your model) penetrate at a uniform depth for consistent tillage.

B. FIELD PERFORMANCE & SPEED

-
Depth Control: Maintain a working depth between 80mm and 200mm. To achieve a deeper "bite" in hard-pan soils, shorten the tractor’s top link to tilt the leading edges of the discs forward.
-
Soil Conditions: If the tractor engine begins to strain or wheels slip excessively, reduce the depth using the hydraulic lift lever. Never exceed the rated tractor power limits (25–50 HP depending on the model) to avoid transmission damage.
-
Consistent Speed: Maintain a steady forward speed that allows the discs to rotate freely. The rotating action is what allows the plough to roll over obstructions and provide a clean soil inversion.

C. TERRAIN & OBSTACLE MANAGEMENT

-
Stony or "Virgin" Land: When tilling uncultivated land, be alert for hidden stumps or large rocks. While the 30mm EN8 solid axles are designed for high-tensile impact, hitting unmovable objects at high speeds can cause structural damage.
-
Non-Stop Plowing: If you encounter small stones or roots, the discs will naturally roll over them. Unlike fixed-blade ploughs, there are no shear bolts to replace, but you should still monitor for abnormal vibrations.
-
Underground Utilities: Before starting, always verify the location of buried irrigation pipes, electrical cables, or gas lines, especially in new fields.

D. TURNING & MANEUVERING

-
The "Lift Rule": Always raise the implement completely out of the ground before making any turns. Turning while the discs are engaged creates massive lateral stress on the 10mm mounting plates and hangers, which can lead to mechanical failure.
-
Tight Spaces: Take advantage of the short turning radius provided by the three-point mounting, but ensure the "No-Go" zone is clear of bystanders before maneuvering in tight corners or headlands.
-
Transport Safety: When moving between fields, ensure high ground clearance is maintained so the 610mm discs do not catch on rough farm roads or ridges.
SERVICE AND MAINTENANCE CARE GUIDE
Regular maintenance of your SPR Series Disc Plough is essential for ensuring superior soil inversion and extending the life of your high-tensile components. Follow this schedule to maintain peak performance in tough South African terrains:
DAILY: (BEFORE EVERY USE)
-
Visual Frame Inspection: Check the 70x70mm square tubing for any cracks in the welds or signs of structural bending.
-
Fastener Security: Check all bolts on the 10mm mounting plates and hangers. High-vibration soil work can loosen hardware.
-
Disc Edge Check: Inspect the 610mm plain discs for major chips or cracks. Dull discs are acceptable, but cracked discs are a safety hazard.
-
Bearing Hubs: Look for leaking grease or excessive play in the UCFL206 triple-seal bearings.
-
Linkage Pins: Ensure all three-point hitch pins and linchpins are in place and locked.
WEEKLY: (EVERY 40-50 WORKING HOURS)
-
Bearing Lubrication: Even though they are triple-sealed, use a grease gun to apply 1–2 pumps of high-quality lithium grease to the grease nipples. Do not over-grease, as this can damage the seals.
-
Scraper Adjustment: Ensure the disc scrapers are positioned approximately 3–5mm from the disc face. They should clear soil but not rub against the metal.
-
Axle Inspection: Check the 30mm EN8 solid axle for any signs of wrapping or misalignment, especially after working in stony ground.
-
Wash Down: Clean off heavy mud and crop residue. Soil trapped against the metal holds moisture and accelerates rust.
MONTHLY: (DEEP INSPECTION)
-
Disc Measurement: Measure the diameter of the discs. Once they wear down significantly (below 550mm), penetration efficiency will drop, and replacement should be planned.
-
Paint Touch-up: Apply rust-preventative paint to any areas where the red coating has been scraped off to prevent corrosion of the main frame.
-
Top Link & Levelling: Re-check that the tractor’s top link moves freely. A seized top link prevents you from adjusting the 80–200mm working depth.
END OF SEASON STORAGE:
-
Anti-Rust Coating: Apply a thin layer of used oil or a specialized rust inhibitor to the shiny faces of the 610mm discs.
-
Hitch Protection: Grease the three-point linkage attachment points to prevent seizing.
-
Dry Storage: If possible, store the plough under a roof or tarp. If stored outside, park it on wooden blocks or a concrete slab so the discs are not sitting in standing water or damp soil.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
SPR Series Disc Plough: FAQ

1. How do I choose between the 2, 3 or 4-disc models?

The choice depends entirely on your Tractor Horsepower (HP).

-
25–30 HP: Use the SPR-2 DP.
-
30–40 HP: Use the SPR-3 DP.
-
40–50 HP: Use the SPR-4 DP.

-
Using a plough too large for your tractor will lead to engine strain and poor soil penetration, while a plough too small will not utilise your tractor's full efficiency.

2. Can this plough handle "Virgin Land" (land never tilled before)?

Yes. The SPR Series is specifically engineered for primary tillage. The heavy-duty 70mm frame and rotating 610mm discs allow it to slice through thick grass, roots and compacted soil that would stop a standard garden plough.

3. What happens if I hit a large rock or hidden stump?

Because the discs rotate, they are designed to roll over most obstructions. Additionally, the 30mm EN8 solid round bar axle is high-tensile steel, meaning it has the "memory" to withstand significant impact without bending or snapping like mild steel alternatives.

4. Do the "Triple-Seal" bearings really make a difference?

Absolutely. Soil tillage creates a "dust cloud" around the hubs. Standard seals eventually allow grit to enter the ball bearings, causing them to seize. Our UCFL206 Triple-Seal system provides three layers of protection, significantly extending the life of the bearing and reducing your maintenance costs.

5. Is the working depth adjustable?

Yes. While the plough is rated for a depth of 80mm to 200mm, you control this via your tractor’s hydraulic lift and the adjustment of the top link. Shortening the top link will tilt the plough forward for deeper "bite" in hard soils.

6. Why are the discs "Plain" rather than "Notched"?

The 610mm Plain Discs provided with the SPR series offer a cleaner, more uniform cut and better soil inversion (turning). They are the preferred choice for general farming and creating a smooth seedbed.

7. How often should I sharpen the discs?

Under normal soil conditions, the discs are self-sharpening as they wear. You only need to manually grind the edges if you are working in extremely soft, sandy soil where there isn't enough friction to naturally maintain the edge.
